Clark Kent
"This is my world. You are my world." DCEU
|
Clark Joseph Kent, born with the Kryptonian name Kal-El, is a super powerful and nigh-indestructible alien, and superhero of the House of El, one of the extremely few survivors of the destruction of Krypton, and an investigative reporter of the Daily Planet. In addition, Kal-El is the first Kryptonian of natural birth in centuries, the host of the Growth Codex.
Superman can change the world.
His powers set him apart from the rest of the people on Earth. His actions has changed the landscape of the world as we see it irrevocably. “Superman” is an ideal, a god among men, someone seen through the lens of the audience rather than the person himself. The real person behind Superman is a man called Clark Kent. Born on Krypton, he was sent to Earth to avoid Krypton’s inevitable demise where he was raised by John and Martha Kent. For five years, Clark was normal. Then his powers emerged and Clark found himself hopelessly lost to their intensity. The world felt too big. He was too strong, too fast . . . too different. This caused him to become more introverted in nature, closing himself off from making strong connections with his friends and peers. That being said, Clark retained all the lessons his parents had ever taught him. To be good, to do good in his life. But Clark lived in a paper thin world, one he always had to keep at arm’s length, lest he accidentally hurt someone or revealed his true nature. Clark Kent is not silent or stoic, though he is a man of few words. He rarely cracks jokes. But underneath that veneer is a man who is always prepared to give someone a reassuring smile or have someone’s back when they feel lost or alone without being prompted. Selfless, compassionate, kind and extremely gentle, Clark always has time to listen to others and to lend a hand. He even has his own quiet, but wry sense of humour and can easily see humour in himself without taking offense or insult. After all, he grew up in Kansas. Clark can save people on large oil tankers but he also takes time to stand up for a waitress being harassed and quits his job so that she wouldn’t take the brunt of his actions. His anger is slow-acting, always tempered by his power but it can be ignited quickly for the people he loves without question like his parents and Lois. While he is not outspoken, Clark is truthful and measured in his dialogue. He doesn’t waste words and rarely speaks out in surprise or anger. Clark often feels guilt and regret over his actions because his actions take on monumental value and as such he worries more about other people than he does about himself. Clark rarely places himself first, not due to a lack of self-esteem, but almost a casual self-disinterest. His humility knows no bounds for a man who can bench press several trucks. The events of Man of Steel changed him and the appearance of Lex Luthor and Batman furthered pushed Clark into re-evaluating the way he saw the world. For a long time, Clark felt disconnected from humanity. He cared for them, appreciated them but he didn’t trust them. Clark was afraid of what his presence could do to the world and in a way - he was right. Superman’s image was in the hands of the people and for as many people he saved, there were naysayers and critics ready with pitchforks. Clark can easily get lost or confused, often dwelling on what he can do and what he should have done. He’s not a constant pillar of strength and righteousness. He suffers from a lot of internal doubts and he finds it hard to verbalize them at times and can only do it privately. But even in the light of all these terrible events culminating around him as he slowly lost control over what or who Superman was, Clark learned one thing. He learned that even if the people howled around him, Earth was still his home. His planet. His people. He was a part of humanity. He means something to the world, even when Clark himself is his own greatest naysayer. Clark learns to put faith in his choices. He puts faith in the people he loves and who love him back like his mother and Lois. And that’s when Clark became Superman. He’s not a boyscout, though he will do whatever saves lives when the situation calls for it. He’s not perfect and tends to close himself off at times. But he’s ready to embrace the legend. He’s ready to be Superman.
